The Free Media Movement has issued a statement regarding the abduction of a journalist.
The organization demands that the truth about this be revealed immediately.
“The abduction, torture and abandonment of a freelance journalist by the name of Sujeewa Gamage is seen as a serious warning to the safety of journalists.
According to Sujeewa Gamage, he was reportedly abducted in Mirigama.
He was taken to a black jeep, his face covered with a black bag, taken home, interrogated, beaten and burned with a hot iron belt. It is alleged that he was tortured by requesting a data card containing controversial information in his possession. It is said that he was abandoned in the Wellampitiya area after obtaining two pen drives and the relevant data card from his house.
Sujeewa Gamage, who is currently running his own periodical magazine, is a freelance journalist who has been involved in several publications.
The abduction took place on March 10. It was revealed on March 15 that Sujeewa Gamage was receiving treatment at the hospital.
Dematagoda Police have taken a statement regarding the incident and it is reported that further investigations are being carried out by the Colombo Crimes Division.”
The Free Media Movement urges the IGP to conduct a speedy investigation into the incident and find out as soon as possible the truth behind the abduction and who carried out the abduction.
The convener of the Free Media Movement Sita Ranjani and its secretary Lasantha de Silva said in a joint statement that the government was urged to take appropriate action regarding the safety of journalists.
